Iris & Ofer Portugaly & the Gospel Choir
When piyyut meets gospel
Menahem Begin Heritage Center
Iris and Ofer Portugaly are among Israel’s leading jazz artists, educators, and innovators. Since the late 1980s, they have built an acclaimed career as performers, composers, arrangers, and bandleaders, appearing at major festivals and concert venues in Israel and abroad. Their work is known for blending jazz with Israeli, Mediterranean, and contemporary musical influences, helping shape a distinctive Israeli jazz identity.
Alongside their artistic achievements, both have played a significant role in music education. Iris formerly served as Academic Director of the Rimon School of Music and headed its Vocal Department for many years, while Ofer has been a senior faculty member at the school.
After founding the Rimon Gospel Choir in 2000 and establishing it as one of Israel’s most distinctive vocal ensembles, the Portugalys went on to create their own gospel choir. Through this ensemble, they developed a unique musical language that combines gospel, jazz, Hebrew texts, and Jewish-Israeli culture. Their choir has collaborated with leading orchestras and artists, toured internationally, and gained widespread recognition for performances that promote messages of hope, unity, and cultural dialogue.
When Gospel Meets Piyyut
What happens when the uplifting sounds of gospel music meet the piyyutim and prayers of the Jewish tradition?
Gospel music, born within African American communities, is renowned for its powerful energy, messages of hope, and spiritual depth. When Gospel Meets Piyyut brings together gospel and jazz with traditional Jewish prayers and liturgical poetry, creating a unique and original musical bridge between cultures.
The program features beloved works such as Adon HaSelichot, A’aroch Mehalel Nivi, Adon Olam, Shir LaMa’alot, and Yedid Nefesh, alongside a special pairing of Lu Yehi and Let It Be, all presented in captivating new arrangements.
The vibrant spirit of gospel joins the rich traditions of synagogue music in a performance that reflects the diversity of Jewish communities and traditions. Performed by a distinctive ensemble, the production creates a moving and unforgettable meeting point between East and West.
The project premiered in 2011 as a production of Beit Avi Chai in Jerusalem and was later recorded as a live album.
